Choosing an elder-care agency: options considered, and who you already ruled out

Three agencies, one already dropped on staffing. Send the remaining two, the reason the third is out, and a single pick — so a sibling is not restarting the search you finished.

You toured three. Harbor said they could start Monday and then could not name a backup aide. Lakeside can start the 10th and has a written weekend plan. Northside is cheaper and will not put overtime in writing. Your brother will otherwise restart Harbor because the name sounds kind.

Send the remaining two. Write Harbor out, with the reason.

The rejected option is part of the decision

The worked examples treat a dropped destination the same way. Ruling something out is work. If it is not on the page, the work did not happen.

Close the list: Lakeside or Northside, by Thursday, because Lakeside's start date slips if you wait. Harbor is out — they could not name a backup. One line. Not a prosecution.

For each remaining agency:

  • start date they stated
  • weekday and weekend coverage, in their words
  • what they would not put in writing
  • cost as a range you actually heard, not a guess from a website

State assumptions. "Dad will accept a stranger if you are there the first morning" is your read. "Lakeside's backup is a real person" is what they told you, or it is inferred from a brochure — say which.

This is not clinical advice and not counsel. It is which company you are hiring.

Write it for the sibling who did not tour

They have not seen the kitchen. They can still pick if you give current state, constraints, and the one thing that already killed Harbor. Do not attach three packets. Quote the start dates and the sentence that bothered you.

A briefing keeps the ask at the top. You approve the note. The session has your ranking of which office "felt caring." Feeling is fine if it is labeled as yours. It is not a staffing plan.

A sufficient reply is "Lakeside" or "Northside, if they email the overtime line by Wednesday." One line, maybe a condition.

They may be across the country and only reading mail

They need no account. Email and a link. If they already use RelayLink, you need an accepted contact. A reply is how you know they have it. A fetched link is not a read. You will not see whether they have called Dad.

Do not retry who has done more. The briefing is the agencies, the rejection, the pick. When the next tour is sitting in a session, connect your assistant and send the remaining two plus the one you already ruled out, so the search does not start over.

Frequently asked questions

Why include the agency you rejected?
So nobody reopens it on Wednesday as if the staffing problem had not already been checked. One line and the reason is enough.
Is this medical or legal advice?
No. It is a family decision about which company to hire, using what those companies told you. Clinicians and counsel answer their own questions.
Do siblings need an account?
No. Email and a link are enough. If they already have a RelayLink account, you need an accepted contact first.
