Hand a lab notebook to your partner without a file dump

Say what you did, what is open, and the next action they own. The shared notebook stays where it is. A dump of files is not a handoff.

2 min read

A lab partner who opens a folder of exports still does not know what to do at 8am. The notebook is somewhere. The last run is somewhere else. The open question is in a chat they were not in.

Hand off the state. Ask them to own the next action. Leave the files where they already live.

What you did, what is open

Three blocks. What you finished โ€” the run, the date, the outcome in a number or a yes/no. What you did not finish. What they should do first tomorrow, including the one thing that will waste a morning if they guess.

Your assistant's context does not transfer. Pasting the session asks them to reconstruct a conversation. Write the current state as if they are cold, because they are.

If a volume or a time is a guess, label it. A tidy methods paragraph the model inferred is how they repeat a run you never actually did.

One next action they confirm

The reply is the point. Ask them to confirm they will start the open step, or to say they cannot and name the blocker. That is a closed ask. "FYI here's everything" has no owner.

A sufficient reply is "I'll start the incubation at 9" or "I cannot โ€” we are out of buffer." Tell them the second answer is the useful one if it is true.

Give a default. "If I do not hear by 10pm I will assume you cannot start and I will not thaw the samples." Silence as assent is how you lose a freezer.

No dump, no auto-send

RelayLink carries no attachments. Point at the shared notebook in one sentence. The briefing is the state.

You draft. You read the numbers. You confirm the send. A handoff under your name is not mailed because the model finished a recap.

If they have no account, they get email and a link. If they already have RelayLink, you need an accepted contact.

Nicknames stay private unless you share them. Write the name on the roster.

If they block you, the block is silent. Do not start a run that needs them.

When the open step fits in a briefing they can answer from a phone, connect your assistant and hand off the state โ€” not the folder.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send the notebook file through RelayLink?
No. There is no file field. Point at the shared notebook. The briefing is the state and the next action.
Why not paste the whole session with my assistant?
[Context does not transfer](/learn/why-ai-context-doesnt-transfer). Your partner was not in that chat. They need the current state and the open step, not a transcript.
What should they reply?
That they have the next action, or that they cannot run it and why. [The reply is the point](/learn/the-reply-is-the-point). 'Thanks' is not a handoff.
